It's amazing how using a mid-wife instead of an ob/gyn has changed my opinion of conventional child birth.
My mid-wife is wonderful...she doesn't panic and is very attentive to my needs. If I'm feeling great, then she doesn't worry about anything. No unnecesary testing...appointments. Nothing!!
My mid-wife is a very calm woman and has a very calming effect when you talk to her. I tend to have uneventful pregnancies so we have meshed very well. I don't make a big deal about anything and neither does she. ![]()
This is a far cry from the ob/gyn I was using for the 1st four weeks of my pregnancy...they would test for everything and told me I was "high-risk" because of my age...uggghh!! I think it has more to do with liability then the fact that I was "high-risk"...I've only just turned 39...so I'm not exactly Methusela's age.
A friend of mine just became a grandma for the first time. Her daughter had a great delivery...just 3 hours. She was able to go natural with no medication. She was a young girl and I was so happy for her.
Unfortunately her experience went from wonderful or bad in just a few hours. The dr's wanted to give the new born baby...1 day old....a hepatitis b vax. My friend and her daughter told the dr., "no". It went from bad to worse. The dr. was nasty and when she tested with a high bilirubin count the dr. wanted her to stop nursing. (This standard practice, but not necessary). When they said they wanted to continue to nurse the dr. became even more irate with them. My friend went to the hospital to find her daughter sitting on her bed in tears.
My heart was breaking for her. Such a young girl to go through this. Thank the Lord she and her boyfriend had her mom there to speak up for them. It made me start to wonder about all these young girls who are bullied into unnecessary tests, vaxes and procedures from these dr's.
People wonder why home-birthing is becoming so popular...this is exactly why. The dr's don't listen. They don't really care...it's all about liability. It's a business, clear and simple. Get em' in and get em' out. Do all these tests and procedures even if they aren't necessary so that they don't get sued.
My friend told me the next time her daughter gets pregnant she will be going with a home birth. I can't say that I blame her. I'm doing the same thing this time around!!
Here is a great documentary: http://www.thebusinessofbeingborn.com/

I used an OB for my first, and a midwife for my next two. I loved my midwives. I would never go back to an OB for pregnancy. A completely different experience -- the one I wanted, not one that was "prescribed" for me. Good post!
